Jerry is my BFF

So I realized I have made it some sort of ritual to visit Jerry's with my friends late at night.
So much so that it's almost like if I haven't gone with you yet, you're not officially my BFF.
In other words, we need to go. Like now. Also because they have midnight madness.
This post was brought to you by one too many bottles of Stella Artois. *burp*

Melt

"In 1669, Brandt, a chemist from Hamburg, while searching for the “philosopher’s stone,” discovered phosphorus. My grandmother, Morning Star, was a Kikapu Indian. She used to say that we’re all born with a box of matches inside. We can’t light them by ourselves, however. Just like in this experiment, we need oxygen and the help of a candle. Except that in our case, the oxygen has to come, for example, from a lover’s breath. The candle can be anything: a melody, a word, a caress, a sound. Anything that pulls the trigger and sets off one of the matches. Every person has to discover what will pull his trigger to enable him to live. Because it is the explosive flare of a match that feeds our souls."

- Doctor John Brown  (Like Water for Chocolate)

Kruger

I was checking out the available art classes this fall and came across a professor: Kruger, B. I checked the dept's site and I was right!! Barbara Kruger teaches at my school! How did I miss this?! She is one of my art heroes. I can't take the class (Senior Studio), but I'd love to meet her. I am trying to get into an art class about photography and society. It's for art majors only but there are a dozen spots open, so I've got my fingers crossed.

Workout

Had one of the most fantastic workouts this afternoon. 30 min uphill jog. So exhausting but worth it.
The music definitely helped. I've been listening to a lot of Ratatat lately. <3 Mirando and Falcon Jab.

Trevor Reznik

This weekend, Netflix delivered The Machinist and Mysterious Skin. I also got Like Water for Chocolate, but it was cracked so I am currently awaiting a replacement. Once I got over the shock of seeing Bale's emaciated body, I was actually really surprised by how complex the Machinist was. I wasn't expecting very much and I definitely wasn't expecting to like it. The ending, the score, and the artistic direction were all very tastefully executed. I also loved all the little recurring details like 1:30 (which is revealed at an hour and thirty minutes into the movie), the forks in the roads, the symbolism of characters (I'd explain but I don't want to spoil it). Mysterious Skin was interesting in an entirely different way. A lot of it was disturbing and made me pretty uncomfortable. I loved that it didn't hold anything back and was really raw and eye-opening. I also adore Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet. Next on my queue is Funny Games, which also stars Brady Corbet and Michael Pitt, as two crazy guys who terrorize a family. Scary...

Ghost World

Just saw Ghost World. I cannot believe I waited 7 years to see this movie. Wow.
It was incredible - enigmatic, melancholic, quirky. Wonderful work by Birch and Buscemi.
The ending took my breath away. The theme song is captivating as well. See it if you haven't.

Dicky

nikoriana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POlS-nXBTHM&feature=related
nikoriana: Skip to 4:40 - the guy in the red pimp suit - I'd totally pick him!
ceruleangalactus: Next can kiss my ass. She's a fucking retard
ceruleangalactus: They ALL need to be killed
nikoriana: Dicky looks like a combo of Weird Al and Captain hook.
ceruleangalactus: I think all of them might be functionally retarded
nikoriana: They are. They're from Los Angeles.
nikoriana: Especially the chick.
ceruleangalactus: And the tool you like
nikoriana: Yeah, but I'd still pick him.
ceruleangalactus: Because you have no standards
nikoriana: Because he makes me laugh uncontrollably
nikoriana: He obviously just realizes it's a joke of a show and runs with it
ceruleangalactus: OK, he wins
nikoriana: NOW he wins??
ceruleangalactus: For I too do my homework while pooping
nikoriana: LOL

Black & White

Yesterday was my 22nd birthday! The Black & White party was on Saturday.
It was a whole lot of fun but a whole lot of work/stress. Glad it's over. Pics here!
(Shockingly, I didn't take a single pic at the party, so I collected others' pics)

Sky City

More Seattle adventures. This time, we are at the Sky City restaurant at the Space Needle. This was one of the most remarkable dining experiences, for many reasons, all of which I have photographed.

Parfum

Like Sin City, this is one of those films that I have wanted to see since before the trailers were even released. And like Sin City, I didn't actually get to see it until months after it was already on DVD. Once again, my instincts were right: it was incredible. As soon as that stillborn baby popped out, I was totally hooked. The story and art direction did not fail to repeatedly bewilder me. It's a very passionate, provocative, and possessive story (yay alliteration). The stylization and score were phenomenal. I really can't say enough good things about this. Even its "wtf omg" value was through the roof. I had bought and started the book a very long while ago, but I never finished it. I will have to go back now seeing as how remarkable this was. I recommend this one to everyone. Wow. Also - stunning poster design.

Network Outage 2008

When I got to work at 10 this morning, I was told that there was a network outage. That meant that all of our systems were down and we were unable to process any orders, any transactions, any fedex dropoffs, and had no access to the internet. Basically, we had to close down the store. We all still stuck around in case the system went back up, as we were completely expecting it to. We were doing everything in our power to resolve the problem, including making a million phone calls and letting people go home early or telling them to not come in at all. I made a poster and saw hundreds of customers walk by it and drive by it in utter disappointment. We explained that there was a fully functioning center 3 miles away but that was too far for pretty much everyone. After we finished whatever jobs we had left to do, we busted out FedEx Monopoly and played for several hours. My manager totally kicked our asses but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. At about 5:00, the system came back up, which was especially convenient because I was scheduled til 6. Once we got everything totally functioning, we opened the doors at 5:30 and got actual work done. I forgot my camera, but I had my phone so I got a bunch of pictures from the the day: here!

Hanna & Leon

At 2 am I picked up Lisa and we went to Denny's. After the most sensational dessert ever, we got back to my house at around 5 am and watched the Dead Zone. We got a little intoxicated and started photographing stuffed animals in compromising positions. We got pretty creative and realized we could probably make a story out of it. That's exactly what Lisa and did and has allowed me to share it. Enjoy.

The BLEAT

This afternoon, in an effort to recuperate from the shard incident, I made myself a fabulous BLT. This idea was inspired by a photo taken on our first night in Seattle, when we ordered a BLT for room service. I had *shockingly* never made a BLT before. I had never even cooked bacon before. Bacon is kind of a bitch to cook, I discovered. First it's frozen so you have to let it really defrost before attempting to peel away the strips. Otherwise it gets really funky. Secondly, with all the natural fat it gives off it has a tendency to GO UP IN FLAMES. That was kind of scary. The sandwich was spectacular, but I thought it could be better. So, for dinner, I made a BLEAT - bacon, lettuce, egg, avocado, and tomato. Now when people ask me what my favorite food is - I have an answer. I used sourdough bread, of course, as well as mayo and mustard, salt and pepper. So simple, so delicious.

Also, I love that I just made an entire post devoted to a sandwich. I did that once for a bagel. And guess what? We have those bagels again! My mom just bought them. YAY.

Shattered

I was watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Shall We Dance when I looked over and noticed my hand covered in blood. I didn't think it was blood at first but rather leakage from a red marker. I kept looking for a red marker to throw away but found nothing. Then I realized a shard of glass sticking out of my middle finger. All this time it had been in there and I hadn't felt a thing. Perhaps my hand had gone numb. I did my best to get it out though I think a tiny fragment is still stuck in there. Seeing the blood and glass kind of put me in shock and gave me a panic attack. I am still a little shaky but at least the mess is cleared up. I just vacuumed to make sure nothing went into my foot this time around. Though I probably wouldn't notice until I dragged blood all over the carpet. What an odd way to start to the day.

More than words

I've probably listened to this song 60 times in the last 12 hours. LOVE.
I've started to edit the +5000 photos from Seattle. So far, I've uploaded about 60.
Here are some photos taken on our flights and at the Burbank and SFO airports. =)

DVR

What do you guys currently have your dvr set to record every episode of (season pass manager)?  Mine:

1. So you think you can dance
2. Project Runway
3. Sheer Genius
4. Divine Design
5. Ace of Cakes
6. Nigella Express
7. Food Network Challenge
8. America's Ballroom Challenge

There are other shows I have set to record, but they aren't currently on, like Heroes, Top Chef, House, etc. I'm just curious about what shows you guys are into enough to record. I wanna get better use out of my dvr and check out some new shows (if you want to recommend any). I am really excited for the new seasons of Project Runway and Sheer Genius. Check them out if you haven't already.
